What is Ureteroscopy (URS) for Stone Treatment?

Ureteroscopy (URS) is the placement of a thin semi-rigid or flexible endoscope through the urethra and bladder into the ureter and/or renal collecting system to directly visualize and treat stones.

Holmium or thulium fiber lasers are used to dust stones (dusting technique) or to fragment them into small pieces that are removed with a basket. It is effective for all stone compositions (including hard stones resistant to ESWL).

Flexible URS allows access to all parts of the kidney, including the lower pole calyx. It has advantages over ESWL during pregnancy, in morbid obesity, in patients on anticoagulants, and in cases with anatomical anomalies.

Symptoms

Ureteral stones (of all sizes)
Kidney stones resistant to ESWL
Kidney stones (<2 cm)
Lower-pole kidney stones
Urinary tract stones in children

Risk Factors

Ureteral injury or perforation (1-3%)
Ureteral stricture (long-term, 1-3%)
Infection (sepsis risk 1-2%)
Residual stone fragments
Symptoms related to a DJ stent

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When severe kidney pain (renal colic) develops
  • If fever and signs of infection due to a ureteral stone occur (urgent)
  • If high fever or prolonged hematuria develops after URS
  • When it is time to remove the DJ stent

Treatment Methods

01
Semi-rigid ureteroscopy (for ureteral stones)
02
Flexible ureteroscopy (for kidney stones)
03
Holmium or thulium fiber laser lithotripsy
04
Placement of a DJ ureteral stent (typically 2-4 weeks)
05
Stone fragment extraction with a basket
