What is Cystoscopy (Bladder Endoscopy)?

Cystoscopy is the insertion of a thin flexible or rigid endoscope (cystoscope) through the urethra to inspect the urethra and bladder directly. It is used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.

Flexible cystoscopy can be performed in the office under local anaesthesia, while rigid cystoscopy is usually performed in the operating room under anaesthesia. Narrow-band imaging (NBI) and blue-light cystoscopy (BLC) enhance tumour detection.

Indications include haematuria work-up, bladder tumour diagnosis and surveillance, urethral stricture assessment, ureteral stent insertion or removal, and intravesical treatment delivery.

Symptoms

Work-up of gross or microscopic haematuria
Bladder tumour diagnosis and surveillance
Evaluation of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS)
Urethral stricture assessment
Ureteral stent procedures

Risk Factors

Urinary tract infection
Transient haematuria
Urethral trauma
Dysuria (burning on voiding)
Bladder perforation (very rare)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When blood is seen in the urine (haematuria work-up)
  • For periodic follow-up of bladder tumour
  • If burning and frequency persist
  • If fever or urinary retention develops after the procedure

Treatment Methods

01
Flexible cystoscopy (diagnostic, office-based under local anaesthesia)
02
Rigid cystoscopy (therapeutic, under anaesthesia)
03
Enhanced imaging with NBI/BLC technology
04
Biopsy and small tumour resection
05
Ureteral stent insertion or removal
