What is Nephrectomy (Kidney Cancer Surgery)?

Nephrectomy is the surgical treatment for kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma - RCC). Partial nephrectomy (nephron-sparing surgery) is preferred whenever feasible for T1 tumors (<7 cm); radical nephrectomy is performed for large or central tumors.

Laparoscopic and robotic approaches provide less blood loss, shorter hospital stay and less pain compared with open surgery; oncologic outcomes are equivalent.

In small renal masses (<4 cm), active surveillance and thermal ablation (cryoablation, RFA) are surgical alternatives in selected patients.

Symptoms

Kidney mass (incidentally detected on CT or US)
Hematuria (blood in urine)
Flank pain
Palpable abdominal mass
Paraneoplastic syndromes (erythrocytosis, hypercalcemia)

Risk Factors

Bleeding and need for transfusion
Urinary fistula (in partial nephrectomy)
Loss of renal function (especially in radical nephrectomy)
Injury to adjacent organs (spleen, pancreas, colon)
Thromboembolic complications

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Urology evaluation when a kidney mass is detected on imaging
  • When blood is seen in the urine
  • If unexplained flank pain and weight loss occur
  • If post-operative fever, bleeding or decreased urine output develops

Treatment Methods

01
Robotic/laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (in T1 tumors)
02
Radical nephrectomy (in large or central tumors)
03
Active surveillance (small masses, elderly and comorbid patients)
04
Thermal ablation (cryoablation, RFA - in selected cases)
05
Cytoreductive nephrectomy + immunotherapy/TKI (in metastatic RCC)
