What is Urodynamic Study?

Urodynamic study is the objective evaluation of bladder storage (filling cystometry) and emptying (pressure-flow study) function with catheter-based pressure sensors and flowmeters.

Main components: uroflowmetry (urinary flow rate measurement), filling cystometry (bladder capacity, sensation, compliance), pressure-flow study (assessment of obstruction), EMG (sphincter activity) and ALPP/VLPP (leak point pressure).

It is indicated before incontinence surgery, in evaluation of neurogenic bladder, in LUTS unresponsive to medical therapy and in complex lower urinary tract symptoms.

Symptoms

Determining incontinence type before surgery
Neurogenic bladder evaluation (MS, spinal cord, Parkinson's)
LUTS unresponsive to medication
Determining the degree of obstruction in BPH
Voiding dysfunction in children

Risk Factors

Urinary tract infection (2-5%)
Discomfort due to catheterization
Hematuria (transient, mild)
Autonomic dysreflexia (in spinal cord patients)
Test-anxiety related artifact

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If incontinence surgery is planned
  • For evaluation of bladder function in neurological disease
  • When medical treatment fails
  • If fever or difficulty voiding develops after the procedure

Treatment Methods

01
Non-invasive uroflowmetry (initial assessment)
02
Invasive urodynamic study (filling cystometry + pressure-flow)
03
Video urodynamics (with fluoroscopy, in complex cases)
04
Ambulatory urodynamics (with natural filling)
05
Treatment planning according to results (medical, surgical, neuromodulation)
