What is Ureterocele Treatment?

Ureterocele is the cystic dilation of the intramural segment of the ureter within the bladder wall. It is classified into two types: orthotopic (intravesical, common in adults) and ectopic (extending to the bladder neck or urethra, common in children).

Ectopic ureterocele is often associated with the upper pole ureter of duplex kidney systems and can cause severe hydronephrosis, infection, and bladder outlet obstruction.

Treatment is planned according to the type of ureterocele, kidney function, and accompanying anomalies. Endoscopic incision (decompression), upper pole heminephrectomy, ureteroneocystostomy, or combined approaches are applied.

Symptoms

Recurrent urinary tract infections
Hydronephrosis (detected prenatally or postnatally)
Bladder outlet obstruction (ectopic ureterocele)
Ureteric stone (impacted within the ureterocele)
Hematuria

Risk Factors

Vesicoureteral reflux (25-50% after endoscopic incision)
Inadequate decompression
Loss of upper pole renal function
Recurrent infection
Ureterocele prolapse

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Postnatal evaluation when hydronephrosis is detected on prenatal ultrasonography
  • In a child with recurrent urinary tract infections
  • In an adult with symptoms due to a ureteric stone
  • If fever or urinary tract infection develops after surgery

Treatment Methods

01
Endoscopic ureterocele incision (primary decompression)
02
Upper pole heminephrectomy (in cases of nonfunctional upper pole)
03
Ureterocele excision + ureteroneocystostomy
04
Robotic/laparoscopic reconstruction
05
Antibiotic prophylaxis (preoperative infection control)
