What is Oropharyngeal Dysphagia?

Oropharyngeal dysphagia is a disorder occurring in the oral and pharyngeal phases of the swallowing process. It is the difficulty in transporting food from the mouth to the pharynx and the upper esophageal sphincter. Neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, myasthenia gravis, post head-and-neck cancer treatment, and age-related sarcopenia are common causes. Aspiration pneumonia is the most serious complication.

Symptoms

Coughing or choking sensation during swallowing
Food sticking in the throat
Wet or gargling speech after meals
Involuntary weight loss
Recurrent lung infections
Drooling

Risk Factors

Neurological diseases (stroke, Parkinson's, ALS)
Head-and-neck surgery or radiotherapy
Advanced age and sarcopenia
Prolonged intubation
Structural anomalies of the esophagus or larynx
