What is Auricular Perichondritis?

Auricular perichondritis is the inflammation of the perichondrium layer surrounding the auricular cartilage and the cartilage itself due to infection. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are the most common pathogens. It can develop with ear piercing, trauma, burns, after otoplasty, and the spread of external ear infections. If untreated, cartilage necrosis and cauliflower ear deformity can occur.

Symptoms

Redness and swelling of the auricle
Severe pain and tenderness on touch
Increased warmth in the auricle
Fever and general malaise
Ear deformity in advanced stages

Risk Factors

Cartilage piercing applications
Ear trauma or burns
Otoplasty or ear surgery
Diabetes and immunosuppression
Recurrent external ear canal infections

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If redness and pain develop in the auricle
  • If there are signs of infection after piercing
  • If a change in ear shape is noticed

Treatment Methods

01
Systemic antibiotic treatment (anti-pseudomonal)
02
Abscess drainage (when needed)
03
Local wound care and compress application
04
Surgical debridement in cartilage necrosis
05
Reconstructive surgery (if deformity has developed)
