What is Labyrinthitis?

Labyrinthitis is inflammation of both the vestibular and cochlear components of the inner ear.

Viral labyrinthitis is the most common form and typically follows an upper respiratory tract infection.

Bacterial labyrinthitis arises as a complication of otitis media or meningitis and can cause permanent hearing loss.

Diagnosis is clinical, supported by audiometry and vestibular testing; MRI is indicated to exclude central causes and retrocochlear pathology.

Symptoms

Severe rotational vertigo
Unilateral hearing loss
Nausea and vomiting
Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)
Nystagmus (involuntary eye movement)
Loss of balance and gait difficulty

Risk Factors

Recent viral upper respiratory infection
Chronic otitis media
Autoimmune disease
Immunosuppression
Meningitis (for bacterial form)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If sudden vertigo and hearing loss occur together
  • If fever accompanies symptoms
  • If symptoms persist beyond 48 hours

Treatment Methods

01
Vestibular suppressants (dimenhydrinate, meclizine) for short-term symptom relief
02
Antiemetics for nausea control
03
Systemic corticosteroids (especially for sudden sensorineural hearing loss)
04
Antibiotics for bacterial aetiology
05
Vestibular rehabilitation exercises for residual imbalance
