What is Choanal Atresia?

Choanal atresia is a congenital malformation in which the posterior portion of the nasal cavity (choana) opening into the nasopharynx is blocked by bone or soft tissue. It may be unilateral or bilateral. Bilateral choanal atresia requires emergency intervention in newborns because newborns are obligate nasal breathers. It is often associated with CHARGE syndrome. Diagnosis is made by inability to pass a nasogastric tube through the nose and by CT.

Symptoms

Cyanosis during feeding in the newborn
Inability to breathe through the nose
Respiratory difficulty relieved by crying
Chronic nasal discharge in unilateral cases
Feeding difficulties

Risk Factors

Presence of CHARGE syndrome
Other congenital anomalies
Family history
Teratogen exposure during pregnancy

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If there is cyanosis during feeding in the newborn
  • If chronic unilateral nasal discharge persists
  • If nasal breathing is inadequate

Treatment Methods

01
Emergency airway safety (oral airway in bilateral form)
02
Endoscopic transnasal choanal atresia repair
03
Stent placement (to prevent restenosis)
04
Postoperative nasal care and follow-up
05
Multidisciplinary evaluation for associated anomalies
