What is Wrist Fracture (Distal Radius Fracture)?

Wrist fracture mostly occurs as a result of the distal end of the radius bone fracturing due to the hand being placed on the ground during a forward fall (FOOSH mechanism). The most common fracture type is the Colles fracture (with dorsal angulation).

While fractures involving the growth plate are important in children, fractures due to osteoporosis can occur much more easily in elderly individuals. Scaphoid fracture constitutes approximately 15% of wrist fractures and its diagnosis can sometimes be difficult.

Untreated or malunited wrist fractures can lead to chronic pain, loss of grip strength, and osteoarthritis.

Symptoms

Sudden severe pain and swelling in the wrist region
Dinner fork deformity (in Colles fracture)
Bruising and tenderness
Limitation of hand and finger movements
Weakness and grip loss in the hand
Numbness or sensory loss (if nerve is affected)

Risk Factors

Osteoporosis (especially postmenopausal women)
Advanced age and balance disorder
Sports such as skiing, skating, cycling
Low calcium and vitamin D levels
Corticosteroid use
Previous wrist injuries

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • In wrist pain and swelling after a fall (emergency)
  • If there is numbness in fingers or hand
  • If there is marked deformity in wrist appearance
  • In increased swelling and color change after casting
  • If movement cannot be regained after cast removal

Treatment Methods

01
Cast or splint immobilization (4-6 weeks)
02
Closed reduction and casting
03
Surgery: volar plate fixation or external fixator
04
Pain management and edema control
05
Finger exercises and hand rehabilitation
06
Osteoporosis treatment and fall prevention
