What is Shoulder Pain and Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is a condition that occurs with inflammation, thickening, and shortening of the shoulder joint capsule, with marked restriction of joint movement in all directions. The process progresses in three stages: painful (freezing) stage, frozen stage, and thawing stage.

Affecting approximately 2-5% of the population, this condition is more common in women and between ages 40-60. The risk is increased in those with diabetes, thyroid diseases, and cardiovascular diseases.

Rotator cuff injuries, biceps tendon problems, and subacromial impingement syndrome are also among the other common causes of shoulder pain.

Symptoms

Gradually increasing, deep pain in the shoulder
Inability to raise the arm to the side or above the head
Pain intensifying at night and sleep disturbance
Sharp pain when the arm is moved behind
Restricted joint movement in all directions
Difficulty putting on upper clothing and combing hair

Risk Factors

Diabetes (increases frozen shoulder risk 5 times)
Thyroid gland diseases
Prolonged immobility of the arm or shoulder
Previous shoulder injury or surgery
Female sex and age 40-60
Parkinson's disease and cardiovascular diseases

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If shoulder movement is markedly restricted
  • If pain lasts longer than 2 weeks
  • If there is pain severe enough to prevent sleep at night
  • If there is sudden loss of movement after trauma
  • If work or daily life activities are disrupted

Treatment Methods

01
Painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs
02
Corticosteroid injection
03
Physical therapy and joint mobilization techniques
04
Hydrodilatation (injection to expand the joint capsule)
05
Manipulation under anesthesia
06
Arthroscopic capsule release surgery
