What is Knee Pain and Meniscus Tear?

The meniscus is a C-shaped fibrocartilaginous structure located between the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone) in the knee joint. It provides load distribution, shock absorption, and joint stability. Each knee has two menisci: medial (inner) and lateral (outer).

Meniscus tears are divided into two main groups: traumatic tears caused by sudden twisting movements or knee bending, and degenerative tears associated with advanced age. Traumatic tears are more common in athletes, while degenerative tears are more common in middle and older age individuals.

The type of tear (longitudinal, transverse, bucket handle, radial, etc.) and its location determine the treatment approach. Tears in the peripheral zone have healing potential due to blood flow, while tears in the inner zone do not heal spontaneously.

Symptoms

Localized pain on the inner or outer surface of the knee
Knee swelling (effusion)
Locking or catching sensation in the knee
Pain worsening with going up and down stairs
Inability to fully flex the knee
Pain increasing with squatting
Knee giving-way sensation

Risk Factors

Sports involving twisting movements such as football, basketball, skiing
Knee osteoarthritis and cartilage degeneration
Overweight
Prolonged work in squatting position
Previous knee injuries
Advanced age

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Situations where the knee is locked and cannot be opened (emergency)
  • Rapidly developing swelling after trauma
  • If knee pain is impairing daily activities
  • Recurrent knee giving-way episodes
  • Pain and swelling lasting longer than 4 weeks

Treatment Methods

01
RICE protocol (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
02
Anti-inflammatory drugs
03
Physical therapy and quadriceps strengthening exercises
04
Arthroscopic meniscus repair (if tear is suitable)
05
Arthroscopic partial meniscectomy
06
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection
