What is Hip Fracture?

Hip fracture is a fracture occurring in the femoral neck or trochanteric region at the upper end of the femur (thigh bone). It is among the most common serious fractures in individuals over 65, and osteoporosis is the main risk factor.

Femoral neck fractures (intracapsular) can impair blood flow to the femoral head and lead to avascular necrosis (bone death). Partial or total hip replacement is preferred in these fractures. Trochanteric fractures are usually treated with a nail or plate-screw.

One-year mortality in elderly patients with hip fracture ranges from 15-36%. Early mobilization and comprehensive patient care reduce mortality.

Symptoms

Severe pain in the hip after a fall
Inability to walk or bear weight on the leg
Externally rotated and shortened appearance of the leg
Tenderness in the groin area
Inability to perform active hip movement
Swelling and bruising

Risk Factors

Osteoporosis and low bone density
Advanced age (especially over 75)
Female sex (estrogen loss)
Previous hip fracture
Balance disorder and fall risk
Vitamin D deficiency and sedentary lifestyle

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Pain and inability to walk in the hip after a fall (emergency)
  • If there is sensory loss or color change in the leg
  • If there is pain after minor trauma in a patient with osteoporosis diagnosis
  • If there is wound redness or fever after surgery
  • If there is leg swelling or increased pain after surgery

Treatment Methods

01
Surgical treatment (usually within 24-48 hours)
02
Intramedullary nail or plate-screw fixation
03
Partial or total hip arthroplasty
04
Early mobilization and physiotherapy
05
Deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis
06
