What is Cervical Disc Herniation?

Cervical disc herniation is the degeneration or traumatic tearing of the intervertebral disc in the cervical region (neck vertebrae) and the inner part pressing on the nerve tissue. The C5-C6 and C6-C7 levels are most commonly affected.

When the disc herniation presses on a nerve root, radiculopathy (pain and numbness radiating to the arm) develops; when it presses on the spinal cord, myelopathy (gait difficulty, loss of hand dexterity) occurs.

Cervical disc herniation can occur due to aging, trauma, prolonged computer work, and poor posture.

Symptoms

Pain radiating to the neck and shoulder
Burning, numbness, or tingling radiating to the arm and fingers
Weakness in the arm and hand
Pain worsening with turning the head
Gait disturbance and loss of balance in advanced cases
Decrease in hand dexterity (difficulty buttoning, etc.)

Risk Factors

Prolonged desk or computer work
Occupations requiring repetitive neck movements
Traffic accident (whiplash injury)
Smoking
Advanced age and disc degeneration
Genetic predisposition

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If there is progressive weakness in arms or legs
  • If gait difficulty or balance disturbance has started
  • If bladder or bowel control is impaired (emergency)
  • If no response to conservative treatment in 6 weeks
  • If there is numbness in both arms

Treatment Methods

01
Cervical collar and activity restriction
02
Anti-inflammatory drugs and neuropathic pain therapy
03
Physical therapy and cervical traction
04
Nerve root injection
05
Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgery
06
Artificial disc replacement
