What is Bone Fractures?

A fracture is the loss of integrity of bone tissue due to external mechanical force or a pathological process (osteoporosis, tumor, infection). Fractures can be closed (skin intact) or open (skin torn, bone visible).

Fracture types include transverse, oblique, spiral (screw-like rotation), comminuted (multiple fragments), compression, and stress fractures. Each type requires a different treatment approach.

Stress fractures develop as a result of repetitive microtraumas and are especially common in marathon runners and people in military training.

Symptoms

Sudden-onset severe pain
Swelling and bruising in the area
Deformity (limb appears different from normal)
Marked limitation and pain with movement
Tenderness that increases with touch
Visible bone or wound in open fractures
Numbness or vascular-nerve findings

Risk Factors

Traffic accidents and falls from heights
Osteoporosis (decreased bone density)
Contact sports and extreme sports
Inadequate calcium and vitamin D intake
Corticosteroid drug use
Advanced age

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Go to the emergency room in any suspected fracture
  • If there is an open fracture or serious bleeding (emergency)
  • If there is no sensation or pulse in the limb (vascular-nerve damage, emergency)
  • If growth plate fracture is suspected in children
  • If there is increasing swelling and pain in the cast or splint after a fracture

Treatment Methods

01
Immobilization with cast, splint, or brace
02
Closed reduction (re-alignment of displaced fracture)
03
Surgical fixation: nail, screw, plate, or external fixator
04
Pain management and edema control
05
Rehabilitation and weight-bearing protocol
06
Medical treatment for osteoporosis
