What is Wrist Fracture (Colles Fracture)?

Colles fracture is a fracture of the distal radius, approximately 2 cm proximal to the wrist, with dorsal angulation and radial displacement. The most common mechanism is a fall onto an outstretched hand (FOOSH).

It accounts for 75% of all wrist fractures and is among the most common fractures overall. It is seen in osteoporotic women with reduced bone density and in young men after high-energy trauma.

Distal ulna fracture, TFCC injury, and median nerve compression may accompany it. Correct reduction and immobilization are critical for long-term wrist function.

Symptoms

Sudden severe pain in the wrist
Characteristic 'dinner fork' deformity
Swelling and bruising
Restricted wrist and finger movement
Numbness in fingertips (median nerve involvement)
Inability to bear weight on the hand

Risk Factors

Osteoporosis (especially postmenopausal women)
Advanced age
Falls on slippery ground or ice
Sports injuries (cycling, skiing)
Low body mass index
Vitamin D and calcium deficiency

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Emergency presentation for wrist deformity or severe pain after a fall
  • Numbness or color change in the fingers (neurovascular risk)
  • Increasing pain or splint tightness after fixation

Treatment Methods

01
Closed reduction and casting (non-displaced or minimally displaced fractures)
02
Percutaneous wire fixation
03
Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) — plate-screw system
04
Radiologic follow-up of reduction
05
Early finger motion after casting
06
Physiotherapy for wrist strengthening and functional gain
