What is Viper Snake Bite?

Vipers (Vipera spp.) are the most common venomous snake species in Türkiye. Viper venom causes local tissue damage and hemotoxic and neurotoxic effects; the bite typically leaves two puncture marks.

Clinical findings vary with patient age, bitten body part, amount of venom injected, and snake species. About one-third of bites are dry (no venom injected).

The cornerstones of treatment are early hospital presentation and antivenom administration when indicated. Old methods such as tourniquet, suction, or incision are strongly discouraged.

Symptoms

Two puncture marks with intense local pain
Progressive swelling and ecchymosis
Nausea, vomiting, sweating, and dizziness
Bleeding tendency from coagulopathy
Hypotension and tachycardia
Ptosis and respiratory difficulty in some neurotoxic species

Risk Factors

Working in fields, vineyards, or rocky areas
Inappropriate footwear
Attempting to capture a snake
Children playing in gardens
Increase in spring and summer months
Alcohol use and inattention
