What is Head Trauma First Aid?

Head trauma is damage to the scalp, skull or brain tissue resulting from a fall, traffic accident or blow. It is classified as mild (concussion), moderate and severe.

Since intracranial bleeding or swelling can cause symptoms hours later, keeping the patient who was initially conscious under observation for 24–48 hours is important.

Symptoms

Headache and dizziness
Short-term loss of consciousness or confusion
Nausea and vomiting
Inequality of pupils
Blood or clear fluid from the ear or nose
Convulsions or progressive impairment of consciousness

Risk Factors

Traffic accidents (not wearing a helmet)
Falls from height
Sports injuries
Violence and assault
Use of blood thinners
Advanced age (high bleeding risk)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Call 112 immediately if there is loss of consciousness after a head blow
  • Progressively worsening headache, vomiting or drowsiness are emergency signs
  • Do not waste time if there is pupil inequality or convulsion
  • Clear fluid leakage from the ear or nose suggests a skull fracture; go to the emergency room

Treatment Methods

01
Neck stabilization and safe transport (cervical collar)
02
Airway protection and oxygen support
03
Brain imaging with CT and neurological evaluation
04
Emergency surgery in epidural/subdural hematoma (craniectomy/craniotomy)
05
Intensive care follow-up, intracranial pressure monitoring and neuro-rehabilitation
