What is Stroke Symptoms and FAST Test?

Stroke is brain tissue damage resulting from the blockage (ischemic) or rupture (hemorrhagic) of a brain vessel. It is one of the leading causes of disability and death worldwide.

The FAST test is a screening method used for stroke symptoms: Face (drooping), Arms (weakness), Speech (difficulty), and Time (call emergency).

Adherence to the 'golden hour' in stroke requires reaching hospital within 4.5 hours of symptom onset for thrombolytic therapy (clot-dissolving drug) to be effective.

Symptoms

Sudden numbness or weakness in face, arm, or leg (especially one-sided)
Difficulty understanding or expressing speech
Unilateral or bilateral visual disturbance
Sudden severe headache (worst headache of life)
Loss of balance, coordination difficulty, or inability to walk
Sudden change in consciousness or confusion

Risk Factors

Hypertension (most important risk factor)
Atrial fibrillation and heart valve disease
Diabetes and high cholesterol
Smoking and obesity
History of TIA (transient ischemic attack)
Advanced age and family history of stroke

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Call emergency services immediately if any FAST symptom is present
  • Go to the emergency department even if symptoms appear transient (it may be a TIA)
  • Apply urgently if sudden severe headache is accompanied by neck stiffness
  • Being in hospital within 4.5 hours of symptom onset is critical

Treatment Methods

01
Thrombolytic (tPA) treatment in the golden hour for ischemic stroke
02
Mechanical thrombectomy for clot removal (in large vessel occlusions)
03
Blood pressure control and surgery if necessary in hemorrhagic stroke
04
Follow-up in intensive care and neurology service
05
Rehabilitation: physiotherapy, speech therapy, and neuropsychological support
