What is Poisoning First Aid?

Poisoning is an emergency that occurs when toxic substances such as drugs, chemicals, plants, mushrooms, foods or gases enter the body. It can occur through the mouth, skin, airway or injection.

The Poison Information Center of Türkiye (114) is the first source to consult for accurate information. Depending on the substance, inducing vomiting can sometimes worsen the situation; therefore random intervention should be avoided.

Symptoms

Nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps
Altered consciousness or drowsiness
Dilation or constriction of pupils
Excessive salivation, tearing or sweating
Seizures or muscle twitches
Skin color changes (pallor, redness, cyanosis)

Risk Factors

Medications left within reach of children at home
Mixing of household cleaning products
Consumption of mushrooms or unknown plants
CO and natural gas leaks
Accidental or intentional drug overdose
Contact with pesticides or agricultural chemicals

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Call 114 or 112 immediately for any suspected poisoning
  • Go to the emergency room if there is loss of consciousness, seizures or shortness of breath
  • Emergency admission is mandatory in all cases where toxic amounts of drugs are known to have been taken
  • In chemical burns or gas exposure, move away immediately and call an ambulance
