What is Respiratory Failure?

Respiratory failure is the failure of the lungs to perform adequate gas exchange. It is divided into Type 1 (hypoxemia, low oxygen) and Type 2 (hypercapnia, high carbon dioxide).

COPD exacerbation, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, asthma attacks, and trauma are among the most common causes. Untreated, organ failure and death may follow.

Symptoms

Severe shortness of breath and respiratory distress
Cyanosis of lips, nails, or skin
Rapid, shallow breathing
Confusion, agitation, or drowsiness
Tachycardia and sweating
Use of accessory respiratory muscles (neck, abdominal)

Risk Factors

COPD, asthma, and interstitial lung diseases
Pneumonia and lung infections
Heart failure and pulmonary edema
Pulmonary embolism
Neuromuscular diseases (ALS, Guillain-Barré)
Severe trauma and drowning

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Call 112 immediately if a resting person cannot breathe
  • Go to the emergency room if cyanosis develops in lips or nails
  • Emergency intervention required when SpO2 falls below 90%
  • Act without delay if altered consciousness coexists

Treatment Methods

01
Oxygen support (mask or nasal cannula)
02
Non-invasive mechanical ventilation (BiPAP/CPAP)
03
Intubation and invasive mechanical ventilation when needed
04
Treatment of the underlying cause (antibiotics, bronchodilator, anticoagulant)
05
ICU follow-up and respiratory physiotherapy
