What is Vaginal Infections?

Vaginal infections are evaluated in three main categories: bacterial vaginosis (occurring with disruption of vaginal flora), vaginal candidiasis (excessive proliferation of Candida fungus), and trichomoniasis (sexually transmitted infection caused by Trichomonas vaginalis parasite).

Bacterial vaginosis is the most common vaginal infection and is characterized by a decrease in protective lactobacilli bacteria and an increase in anaerobic bacteria. A fishy odor and gray-white discharge are typical.

Recurrent vaginal infections may be a harbinger of immune system problems, diabetes, or sexually transmitted diseases; therefore, culture and microbiological evaluation are important.

Symptoms

Abnormal vaginal discharge (change in color, odor, and consistency)
Vaginal itching and burning sensation
Pain during intercourse
Burning during urination
Redness, swelling, or tenderness in the vulva
Fishy odor (especially after intercourse, in bacterial vaginosis)

Risk Factors

Antibiotic use (disrupts vaginal flora)
Uncontrolled diabetes
Immune system weakness
Excessive vaginal douching and perfumed product use
Unprotected sexual intercourse
High humidity and tight synthetic clothing

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When discharge takes on a yellow-green color or appears foamy
  • When severe pain and fever accompany
  • When home-started antifungal medication does not give results in 1 week
  • When 4 or more recurrent infections are experienced in the same year
  • When any vaginal symptom appears during pregnancy

Bacterial vaginosis: Metronidazole or clindamycin (oral or vaginal)
02
Candidiasis: Fluconazole (single oral dose) or topical azole creams
03

04
Reconstruction of vaginal flora with probiotic support
