What is Ovarian Cyst?

Ovarian cysts are sacs developing on or within the ovary surface, mostly containing fluid. Functional cysts (follicular cyst and corpus luteum cyst) emerge as a natural part of the menstrual cycle and usually resolve spontaneously within 1-3 months.

Pathological cysts include dermoid cysts, endometriomas (chocolate cysts), and serous/mucinous cysts. These cysts remain longer and can carry complication risk as they grow.

In women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), multiple small cysts can form in the ovaries. Though rare, an ovarian cyst can be a sign of ovarian cancer; therefore, regular follow-up is of great importance.

Symptoms

Dull pain or pressure sensation in the lower abdomen or groin area
Abdominal bloating or fullness sensation
Menstrual irregularities
Pain during intercourse
Frequent urination or sensation of incomplete emptying
Sudden severe abdominal pain and nausea in cyst rupture

Risk Factors

Being in the reproductive age
Diagnosis of endometriosis
Family history of ovarian cyst or ovarian cancer
Hormonal imbalances
Ovulation-inducing drugs used in infertility treatment
Obesity

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When sudden, severe pelvic or abdominal pain is experienced
  • When nausea, vomiting, and fever accompany the pain
  • When a progressively growing swelling in the abdomen is noticed
  • When menstrual irregularity or abnormal bleeding persists
  • If a cyst detected on ultrasound is growing at follow-up examinations

Treatment Methods

01
Watch-and-wait: 1-3 months ultrasound follow-up in small functional cysts
02
Oral contraceptives: Hormonal regulation to prevent new cyst formation
03
Laparoscopic cystectomy: Removing the cyst while preserving the ovary
04
Oophorectomy: Removal of the ovary in large, suspicious, or complicated cysts
05
Emergency surgery in cyst rupture or torsion
06
GnRH agonists combined with surgery for endometrioma
