What is Uterine Transplantation?

Uterine transplantation is a complex transplant surgery in which a uterus from a living or deceased donor is implanted into a recipient with absolute uterine factor infertility. It is performed in a limited number of centers worldwide, and protocol standardization is ongoing.

The process includes donor selection, resection, vascular anastomosis, immunosuppressive therapy, and embryo transfer. Pregnancy is usually started 6-12 months after transplantation, and deliveries are by cesarean. The graft is usually removed (hysterectomy) after one or two live births.

Ethical debates, fetal effects of long-term immunosuppression, and high cost are reasons the procedure has limited application. Teams closely monitor cardiovascular, infectious, and nephrotoxic side effects.
