What is Tympanic Membrane Perforation Emergency?

Tympanic membrane perforation can develop from direct trauma (cotton swab, key), pressure changes (explosion, diving), infection (acute otitis media), or high-intensity sound exposure.

Small perforations usually heal spontaneously within 6-8 weeks; however, large tears carry risk of chronic otitis and cholesteatoma development.

Treatment consists of keeping the ear dry, antibiotics when needed, and surgical repair (myringoplasty). Avoidance of water contact is important for healing.

Symptoms

Sudden ear pain
Sudden hearing loss
Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)
Bloody, serous, or purulent discharge
Dizziness and balance disturbance
Nausea-vomiting (vestibular involvement)
Sense of pressure change

Risk Factors

Inserting cotton swab or foreign body into the ear
Acute middle ear infections
Rapid pressure change (diving, flying)
Explosion and proximity to firearms
Boxing and head trauma
Recurrent otitis in children
