What is Trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis is the most common curable sexually transmitted infection worldwide, caused by the single-celled parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Approximately 170 million new cases are reported globally each year.

The infection involves the vagina, urethra, and cervix. Men are most often asymptomatic. In women, it can cause frothy discharge, itching, and the characteristic 'strawberry cervix' appearance.

Untreated trichomoniasis increases the risk of HIV transmission and is associated with preterm birth and low birth weight in pregnant women. Concurrent partner treatment is essential.

Symptoms

Yellow-green, frothy, foul-smelling vaginal discharge
Vaginal itching, burning, and irritation
Pain during sexual intercourse
Burning when urinating and frequent urination
Mild lower abdominal pain
Half of cases are asymptomatic

Risk Factors

Multiple sexual partners
Not using condoms
Previous STI history
Young age
HIV positivity
Low socioeconomic status

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

Concurrent treatment of the sexual partner is mandatory
