What is Traumatic Amputation First Aid?

Traumatic amputation is the partial or complete severance of a limb after a work, traffic or home accident. Bleeding can rapidly cause shock, and proper first aid determines the patient's survival and the chance of replantation of the severed limb.

Modern microsurgery enables successful replantation of fingers, hands, forearms and feet. Appropriate cold-chain handling and short ischemia times (6-12 hours for upper extremity, 4-6 hours for large muscle groups) increase success rates.

Occupational health and safety measures, correct machinery use and personal protective equipment are critical to preventing work accidents.

Symptoms

Complete or partial severance of a limb
Severe bleeding
Hypovolemic shock (hypotension, tachycardia)
Severe pain
Pale, cold and clammy skin
Confusion
Anxiety and panic

Risk Factors

Workplace accidents (machinery, saws)
Traffic and train accidents
Explosions and combat injuries
Use of agricultural tools
Accidents with home appliances and food processors
Children's access to motor vehicles

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Call 112 immediately for any amputation
  • Transport to a microsurgery center as quickly as possible is mandatory
  • Bring the severed part with the patient even if it appears damaged
  • In trauma patients, consciousness check and shock prevention are top priorities

Treatment Methods

01
Bleeding control with direct pressure and pressure bandages
02
Tourniquet as a last resort (time must be documented)
03
The severed part should NOT be washed or cleaned; it should be wrapped in moist gauze
04
Transport in a plastic bag on ice (without direct contact with ice)
05
Prevention of hypovolemic shock, IV fluids
06
Microsurgical replantation evaluation
