What is First Aid in Traffic Accidents?

Traffic accidents are emergencies that can cause multiple injuries after a sudden collision or rollover. According to World Health Organization data, more than 1.2 million people lose their lives in traffic accidents every year and 20–40 million injuries occur.

The aim of first aid is to make the scene safe, call 112, triage in multiple injuries, stop bleeding, and if possible not move the injured person. If spinal injury is suspected, the injured should not be moved from their position.

Passive safety measures such as seat belts and airbags, compliance with speed limits, first aid training, and availability of ambulance resources are the key factors determining mortality.

Symptoms

Confusion or loss of consciousness
Shortness of breath and respiratory problems
Uncontrolled external bleeding
Fracture and crush injuries
Hypotension, cold-moist skin
Neck and back pain (suspicion of spinal injury)
Chest pain and deformity

Risk Factors

Exceeding speed limits and not using seatbelts
Drunk and tired driving
Distracting mobile phone use
Poor road and weather conditions
Children not using appropriate seat systems
Failure to perform vehicle technical maintenance

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Call 112 immediately if there is loss of consciousness, shortness of breath or severe bleeding in any accident
  • Do not move the injured if possible; consider the risk of spinal injury
  • Emergency evaluation is required even in low-impact accidents during pregnancy
  • It is recommended that children go through hospital check-up even if there is no visible injury

Treatment Methods

01
Securing the scene, reflector/fire precautions
