What is Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)?

Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) is a tendinopathy characterized by angiofibroblastic hyperplasia at the attachment of the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) tendon on the lateral epicondyle, resulting from repetitive microtrauma; it is a degenerative rather than truly inflammatory process.

Although tennis players account for only about 5% of cases, the condition derives its name from this sport. Carpenters, computer users, gardeners, and butchers are also at high occupational risk.

It affects approximately 1-3% of the general population, most commonly between ages 35-55. Most cases resolve spontaneously within 6-12 months, though refractory cases can become a long-term problem.

Symptoms

Burning or dull pain on the outer side of the elbow
Pain with wrist extension and gripping
Tenderness with pressure over the lateral epicondyle
Difficulty holding and lifting objects
Pain when turning a doorknob
Increased pain when straightening the elbow

Risk Factors

Tennis and racket sports (especially incorrect backhand technique)
Repetitive wrist extension-supination movements
Working with vibrating tools
Age 35-55 and lack of regular exercise
Weak forearm muscles
Improper equipment (heavy racket, wrong grip size)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • For lateral elbow pain lasting longer than 6 weeks
  • When gripping activities are limited by pain
  • When conservative treatment fails
  • For evaluation of PRP or surgery

Treatment Methods

01
Activity modification and rest
02
Ice application and NSAIDs
03
Physical therapy: eccentric exercises, ultrasound, laser
04
Lateral epicondyle counterforce brace
05
Corticosteroid injection (short-term symptom control)
06
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection
