What is Tendinitis (Tendon Inflammation)?

Tendinitis is a painful condition in which inflammation and microdamage are seen together in the tendon structure. Today, the term 'tendinopathy' is also used because degenerative changes, rather than inflammatory changes, are prominent in chronic cases.

Rotator cuff tendinitis (shoulder), lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), patellar tendinitis (jumper's knee), and Achilles tendinitis are the most common types. They are usually associated with overuse, sudden activity increase, or incorrect technique.

The tendinitis process progresses with inflammation in the acute phase, collagen disorganization in the subacute phase, and degeneration in the chronic phase.

Symptoms

Pain at the beginning or after movement
Tenderness along the tendon line and painful palpation
Slowing or restriction of movement
Sometimes swelling and local warmth
Pain worsening during exercise
Pain that goes away with rest but returns with activity

Risk Factors

Sudden increase in training intensity
Occupations or sports requiring repetitive movements
Biomechanical disorders (flat foot, knee inward rotation)
Inadequate warm-up and cool-down
Advanced age and loss of tendon flexibility
Fluoroquinolone antibiotic use

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If pain lasts longer than 2 weeks
  • If you cannot do daily activities
  • If pain persists at rest
  • If swelling becomes prominent along the tendon line
  • If there was a sudden 'pop' sound and weakness (suspected tear)

Treatment Methods

01
RICE protocol and activity modification
02
Eccentric strengthening exercises
03
Physical therapy and manual therapy
04
Corticosteroid or PRP injection
05
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT)
06
Correction of underlying biomechanical problem
