What is Sports Injuries?

Sports injuries are divided into two main groups: acute (suddenly occurring with impact or strain) and chronic/overuse injuries. Muscle strains, ligament sprains, tendon injuries, fractures, and cartilage damage constitute the most common types.

Sports medicine covers performance optimization and injury prevention in addition to injury treatment. Proper warm-up, training load management, and biomechanical analysis significantly reduce the risk of injury.

The return-to-play decision in athletes should be made according to both medical and functional criteria; early return increases the risk of re-injury.

Symptoms

Sudden-onset or gradually developing pain
Swelling, bruising, and loss of function
Weakness and decreased performance
Restriction of movement
Recurrent injuries in the same area
Tenderness along the muscle or tendon line

Risk Factors

Inadequate warm-up and cool-down routine
Rapid increase in training load
Fatigue and shortened recovery time
Previous injury
Inadequate nutrition and sleep
Incorrect technique and equipment

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When unable to bear weight or move
  • If there is marked swelling and deformity
  • If numbness, sensory loss, or weakness develops
  • In pain lasting longer than 5-7 days that does not resolve with rest
  • In frequently recurring injuries in the same area

Treatment Methods

01
Acute phase: PRICE protocol (protection, rest, ice, compression, elevation)
02
Pain and inflammation management
03
Specific rehabilitation and strengthening program
04
Biomechanical analysis and technique correction
05
Surgical treatment when necessary
06
Gradual return-to-sport program
