What is Spontaneous Pneumothorax Emergency Intervention?

Primary spontaneous pneumothorax is the leakage of air into the pleural space due to rupture of small air sacs (blebs) on the lung surface in individuals without underlying lung disease.

Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax develops on the background of underlying lung diseases such as COPD, cystic fibrosis, or tuberculosis and is generally more severe.

Treatment includes observation, needle aspiration, or chest tube placement depending on the size of the pneumothorax and clinical picture. Surgical pleurodesis is considered for recurrent cases.

Symptoms

Shortness of breath
Decreased breath sounds (on the affected side)
Tachycardia

Cyanosis (in large pneumothoraces)

Risk Factors

Being a tall, thin young male
Smoking

Marfan syndrome
Family history of pneumothorax
