What is Spine Surgery?

Spine surgery covers surgical interventions for a wide range of problems such as disc herniation (microdiscectomy), spinal canal stenosis (laminectomy-decompression), spondylolisthesis (fusion for spondylolysis/spondylolisthesis), deformity correction, and spinal tumor.

Minimally invasive spine surgery (MIS) is performed with small incisions, endoscopically or with tube-retractor assistance; blood loss, hospital stay, and recovery time are markedly shortened.

Surgical indication is determined by the presence of neurological findings, the intensity of pain, and unresponsiveness to at least 6 weeks of conservative treatment.

Symptoms

Leg or arm pain resistant to conservative treatment
Progressive muscle weakness
Dramatic decrease in walking distance (neurogenic claudication)
Impairment in bladder or bowel control (cauda equina syndrome, emergency)
Spine deformity and posture disorder
Findings of spinal tumor or infection

Risk Factors

Unresponsive to at least 6 weeks of conservative treatment
Progressive neurological loss
Cauda equina syndrome (emergency surgery)
Spine instability
Structural deformity (severe scoliosis, kyphosis)
Spinal tumor or infection

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If bladder or bowel control is impaired (emergency)
  • If there is rapidly progressive weakness in the leg or arm
  • If no response to conservative treatment in 6 weeks
  • For surgical evaluation if MRI findings correspond to complaints
  • If new neurological symptoms develop after surgery

Treatment Methods

01
Microdiscectomy (lumbar or cervical)
02
Laminectomy and spinal decompression
03
Spinal fusion (TLIF, PLIF, ALIF, XLIF)
04
Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF)
05
Minimally invasive endoscopic disc surgery
06
Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty (for vertebral fractures)
