What is Labrum Tear (Shoulder)?

The labrum is a fibrocartilaginous ring around the rim of the glenoid (the socket of the scapula) of the shoulder joint. It increases joint depth, holds the humeral head in place, and contributes to joint stability.

Labral tears can develop after repetitive overhead motion (throwing sports), sudden shoulder strain, or dislocation. A Bankart lesion (anterior labral tear) is associated with recurrent shoulder dislocation.

Swimmers, baseball players, volleyball players, and gymnasts are the athletes at greatest risk. Untreated labral tears may also affect the joint cartilage.

Symptoms

Deep, dull shoulder pain
Clicking or locking sensation with movement
Feeling that the shoulder is slipping out
Pain when reaching with the upper arm
Weakness in overhead activities
Tendency to recurrent shoulder dislocation

Risk Factors

Throwing sports (baseball, volleyball, tennis)
History of shoulder dislocation
Contact sports such as gymnastics and wrestling
Sudden fall on the shoulder
Repetitive upper extremity motion
Shoulder laxity (loose joint)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Persistent pain and instability after a shoulder dislocation
  • Recurrent feeling that the shoulder slips out
  • Pain that does not respond to 4-6 weeks of physiotherapy
  • Shoulder pain seriously limiting sports performance
  • When MRI confirms a labral tear

Treatment Methods

01
Conservative: physiotherapy, scapular stabilization exercises
02
Anti-inflammatory medication
03
Arthroscopic labral repair (Bankart repair)
04
Latarjet procedure (with bone defect)
05
Postoperative immobilization and graduated rehabilitation
06
Return to sport after 4-6 months
