What is Postpartum Depression?

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a mental health disorder characterized by depressive mood starting in the weeks or months following childbirth and lasting longer than 2 weeks. It affects 10-20% of new mothers; when unrecognized, it can harm both the mother and the baby's development.

It should not be confused with 'baby blues' seen on days 3-5 after delivery that resolves spontaneously. PPD is more severe and long-lasting but completely treatable.

Postpartum psychosis is much rarer (0.1-0.2%) but a medical emergency; because it includes delusions, hallucinations, and risk of harm to the baby, hospitalization should be sought immediately.

Symptoms

Persistent sadness, crying spells, and hopelessness
Indifference to the baby or environment and inability to bond
Fear or thought of harming oneself or the baby
Excessive fatigue, sleep disturbance, and appetite changes
Difficulty concentrating and inability to make decisions
Social withdrawal, anxiety, and panic attacks

Risk Factors

History of previous depression or anxiety
Depression during pregnancy
Lack of social support and partner relationship problems
Stressful life events
Difficult or traumatic delivery experience
Health problems or colic in the baby

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When sadness, crying, or emptiness lasting more than 2 weeks after delivery is experienced
  • If interest and attachment to the baby cannot be established
  • When thoughts of harming oneself or the baby emerge (EMERGENCY)
  • When family or loved ones notice serious changes in the mother
