What is Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation?

Pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) results from falls, motor vehicle collisions, sports, or non-accidental injury, with severity classified by Glasgow Coma Scale, imaging, and clinical course.

Rehabilitation focuses on motor recovery, cognitive and behavioral function, language and communication, swallowing safety, sleep regulation, and academic reintegration with developmentally appropriate goals.

Outcomes depend on age at injury, pre-injury function, lesion location, environmental support, and intensity of rehabilitation; children show high neuroplasticity but also vulnerability to long-term neurodevelopmental consequences.

Symptoms

Motor weakness, spasticity, ataxia, or hemiparesis
Cognitive deficits in attention, memory, executive function, and processing speed
Behavioral and emotional changes — irritability, impulsivity, depression, anxiety
Communication and swallowing difficulties
Sleep disturbance, fatigue, and post-traumatic headaches

Risk Factors

Severe initial injury with prolonged loss of consciousness
Diffuse axonal injury and intracranial hemorrhage on imaging
Younger age at injury and limited pre-injury cognitive reserve
Lower socioeconomic status and limited family or community resources
Coexisting orthopedic, spinal cord, or visceral injuries

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • New deficits noticed after a TBI — motor, cognitive, or behavioral
  • Plateau of recovery despite ongoing therapy
  • School performance decline or behavioral regression after injury
  • Family stress, caregiver burden, or psychosocial concerns

Treatment Methods

01
Early initiation of rehabilitation in the acute care setting and transition to inpatient or day rehabilitation
02
Physical, occupational, speech-language, and neuropsychological therapy tailored to age and severity
03
Spasticity management with stretching, orthoses, botulinum toxin, intrathecal baclofen, or selective dorsal rhizotomy when needed
04
Cognitive-behavioral therapy, behavior management, and school reintegration with individualized education plan
05
Long-term follow-up with rehabilitation, neurology, neuropsychology, and family support including respite and advocacy
