What is Pediatric Trauma Approach?

Trauma in children is one of the leading causes of childhood death worldwide. The large head, elastic skull, soft bones, and narrow airway of children create unique injury patterns anatomically.

Physiologically, children can tolerate blood loss for a long time and decompensate late; therefore, initial vital signs may be misleading. Hypotension is a late and ominous sign in a child.

Trauma assessment is performed using the ABCDE approach, the pediatric trauma score, appropriately sized equipment (Broselow tape), and emotional support.

Symptoms

Altered consciousness and vomiting in head trauma
Respiratory distress in chest trauma
Abdominal pain and distension in abdominal trauma
Deformity and edema in extremity trauma
Signs of shock (tachycardia, cold extremities)
Back-neck pain and motor deficit

Risk Factors

Traffic accidents (pedestrian, in-vehicle)
Falls and falls from height
Bicycle and play accidents
Maltreatment and abuse
Burns
Drowning and submersion

  • Suspicion of abuse should be reported to relevant units

Treatment Methods

01
Pediatric-sized airway and respiratory support
02
Cervical collar and immobilization
