What is Pediatric Sudden Cardiac Death Risk?

Sudden cardiac death in children and adolescents is rare but devastating, often associated with structural and electrical heart diseases.

Common causes include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, long QT syndrome, Brugada syndrome and congenital coronary anomalies.

Most cases occur during sport or exertion.

Symptoms

Exercise-induced syncope or near-syncope
Palpitations or sudden tachycardia
Family history of sudden death younger than 50 years
Recent symptoms of seizure or unexplained drowning
Often the first symptom is sudden cardiac arrest

Risk Factors

Family history of sudden cardiac death
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or genetic predisposition
Long QT, Brugada and CPVT syndromes
Coronary artery anomalies
Use of stimulant medications and substance abuse

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Sudden loss of consciousness during exercise — urgent
  • Family history of sudden death younger than 35 years
  • Recurrent palpitations or chest pain in adolescent athletes
  • Suspicious findings on pre-participation evaluation
