What is Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)?

Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is a complementary approach developed in the 19th century in the United States by Andrew Taylor Still, comprising manual techniques targeting the musculoskeletal system.

There are studies showing limited benefit in some musculoskeletal pain, particularly nonspecific mechanical low back pain. However, efficacy in visceral diseases has not been proven.

In Türkiye, it is administered by certified physicians under the GETAT regulations. Rare but serious complications, particularly involving the cervical spine, can occur during manipulation.

Symptoms

Nonspecific mechanical low back pain
Neck and shoulder tension
Musculoskeletal pain
Chronic tension-type headache
Functional musculoskeletal disorders
Support after sports injuries

Risk Factors

Cervical vertebrobasilar insufficiency
Osteoporosis and bone fractures
Degenerative spine disease
Anticoagulant use
Active rheumatologic inflammation
Malignancy and metastasis

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If red flag symptoms (night pain, weight loss, neurologic deficit) are present, consult a physician first
  • Prefer a certified physician for manipulative therapy
  • Cervical manipulation can carry serious complications
  • First medical diagnosis, then complementary treatment

Treatment Methods

01
Detailed history and physical examination
02
Neurologic and vascular screening
03
Exclusion of red flags
04
Soft tissue, mobilization, and manipulation techniques
05
Integration with conventional treatment
06
Follow-up and exercise recommendations
