What is Cupping Therapy (Hijama)?

Cupping therapy (hijama) is a traditional method in which glass or silicone cups are applied to the skin to create suction. In dry cupping only negative pressure is used, while in wet cupping small superficial incisions are made and a small amount of blood is drawn.

Although the mechanism is not fully understood, increased blood flow, myofascial release, and a local anti-inflammatory effect are proposed.

Symptoms

Chronic back and neck pain
Myofascial pain and trigger points
Headache and migraine
Fatigue and weakness
Post-exercise muscle tension and recovery
Some skin conditions (dry cupping)

Risk Factors

Use of blood thinners
Should not be applied to skin disease or open wounds
Anemia and coagulation disorders (for wet cupping)
Application to certain areas should be avoided in pregnancy
Infection risk in diabetes or immunodeficiency
Skin burns or infection with an untrained practitioner

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Disclose your medication list and chronic conditions before the procedure
  • Bruising and redness on the skin after the procedure are normal
  • If fever or signs of infection develop, see a doctor immediately
  • Performance by a certified health professional improves safety

Treatment Methods

01
Dry cupping: 5-15 minutes of negative-pressure application
02
Wet cupping: drawing of a small amount of blood after a superficial incision
03
Weekly or biweekly session schedule
04
Can be combined with physiotherapy and exercise
05
Number and frequency of sessions are determined by clinical response
