What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment based on traditional Chinese medicine in which fine needles are inserted at specific points on the body (acupuncture points). It is thought to act through the release of endorphins and modulation of the nervous system.

The World Health Organization (WHO) supports acupuncture for various indications, primarily chronic pain, migraine, chemotherapy-induced nausea, and certain functional disorders.

Symptoms

Chronic low back and neck pain
Migraine and tension-type headache
Osteoarthritis pain
Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue
Sleep disorders and anxiety

Risk Factors

Use of blood thinners (bleeding risk)
Pacemaker or implant (affects electroacupuncture)
Application over an area of skin infection
Stimulation of certain points should be avoided in pregnancy
Immunodeficiency (infection risk)
Risk of an untrained practitioner

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Disclose your current health conditions and medications before acupuncture
  • Inform the practitioner in advance if you have a bleeding disorder or use a pacemaker
  • In serious illness, acupuncture cannot replace conventional treatment
  • Ensure that it is performed by a licensed and certified specialist

Treatment Methods

01
Session frequency: 1-3 sessions per week, 6-12 sessions depending on the condition
02
Dry needling, electroacupuncture, or moxibustion as additional techniques
03
May be combined with physiotherapy and exercise in pain management
04
Maintenance sessions can be planned in chronic conditions
05
Patients are referred to conventional treatment if acupuncture fails
