What is Ozone Therapy?

Medical ozone therapy is the application of an ozone-oxygen mixture at specific concentrations via rectal, intravenous, local, or major/minor autohemotherapy routes. Its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-oxygenation effects are being investigated.

In Türkiye it can be administered by physicians licensed under the Traditional and Complementary Medicine regulation. It is used as an adjunct in chronic wounds, joint disease, and certain infectious conditions.

Symptoms

Chronic diabetic wounds and venous ulcers
Chronic infection and immune support
Degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis)
Chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia
Pain due to disc herniation (ozone nucleolysis)
Applications for antioxidant support

Risk Factors

Direct intravenous ozone injection is contraindicated (embolism risk)
Should not be administered in patients with G6PD deficiency
Hyperthyroidism and active bleeding
Pregnancy (especially first trimester)
Inhaled ozone causes lung damage
Risk is high with an untrained or unlicensed practitioner

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Have ozone therapy administered only by a licensed traditional/complementary medicine physician
  • Disclose your current medications and chronic conditions
  • If you are receiving cancer treatment, do not start without consulting your oncologist
  • Stop the procedure if you experience side effects or unusual symptoms

Treatment Methods

01
Major/minor autohemotherapy (the most common method)
02
Rectal insufflation
03
Local ozone application (bagging, direct gas)
04
Ozone nucleolysis (for disc herniation under fluoroscopy)
05
Number and protocol of sessions are individualized
