What is Osteoarthritis (Joint Calcification)?

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative joint disease in which the joint cartilage gradually thins and is destroyed, also affecting the underlying bone (subchondral bone) and the synovial membrane. The knee, hip, hand, and spine are the most commonly affected joints.

As cartilage is damaged, the joint space narrows, osteophytes (bone spurs) form at the bone ends, and the quality of joint fluid decreases. This process can progress silently for years.

In Türkiye, radiologic findings of osteoarthritis are detected in approximately half of the population over age 65. Its social and economic burden is quite large.

Symptoms

Pain that emerges with starting movement (start-up pain)
Morning stiffness (usually less than 30 minutes)
Swelling and warmth in the joint
'Cracking' sound with movement (crepitus)
Decreased range of joint motion
Difficulty with stairs and walking
Rest pain in advanced stage

Risk Factors

Advanced age
Overweight and obesity
Previous joint injury
Repetitive joint loading (occupational or sports)
Female sex (especially knee OA)
Genetic predisposition and joint alignment disorder

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If joint pain is restricting daily activities
  • If morning stiffness and swelling persist
  • If response to painkillers is decreasing
  • If marked deformity is developing in the joint
  • If walking distance is markedly shortening

Treatment Methods

01
Weight loss and aerobic exercise
02
Painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs
03
Physical therapy and strengthening exercises
04
Assistive devices (cane, knee orthosis)
05
Intra-articular corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid injection
06
Total knee or hip arthroplasty (advanced stage)
