What is Orthopedic Deformity Correction?

The center of rotation of angulation (CORA) framework guides accurate planning by identifying the apex and orientation of deformity on full-length standing radiographs, supplemented by CT/MRI for rotational analysis.

Acute correction uses osteotomy with plate, locking, intramedullary nail or external fixation, ideal for moderate single-plane deformities; gradual correction with Ilizarov or hexapod (Taylor Spatial Frame, TrueLok-Hex) handles complex multi-planar deformities and lengthening.

Motorized intramedullary nails (PRECICE, FITBONE, STRYDE) and motorized external fixation enable controlled lengthening of 1 mm/day with consolidation, preferred when soft-tissue or skin issues complicate frames.

Symptoms

Visible angular or rotational malalignment
Limb-length discrepancy with limp
Pain in adjacent joints from malalignment
Difficulty with gait or shoe wear
Failed prior surgery or malunion

Risk Factors

Posttraumatic malunion or growth arrest
Rickets, achondroplasia or skeletal dysplasia
Blount disease or Erlacher-Blount
Congenital limb deficiencies
Neuromuscular conditions (CP, polio sequelae)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Progressive deformity not responding to conservative care
  • Limb-length discrepancy greater than 2 cm
  • Pain affecting adjacent joints
  • Failed prior corrective surgery
  • Severe rotational malalignment

Treatment Methods

01
Full-length standing radiographs and CORA analysis
02
Acute correction by osteotomy and internal fixation
03
Gradual correction with Ilizarov or hexapod frames
04
Motorized intramedullary lengthening when suitable
05
Multidisciplinary rehabilitation with physical therapy
06
Long-term follow-up to monitor recurrence and joint alignment
