What is 3D Planning in Orthopedics?

Virtual surgical planning starts with high-resolution CT or MRI segmentation, then uses CAD software to plan osteotomies, implant positioning, screw trajectories and reconstruction outcomes.

Patient-specific instrumentation (PSI) and 3D-printed guides translate the virtual plan into the operating room, supporting deformity correction, total knee/shoulder arthroplasty, complex acetabular fractures and pelvic tumor resections.

3D-printed implants (custom titanium cages, hemipelves, mandibular plates) are increasingly used for limb salvage, revision arthroplasty and reconstruction after en-bloc tumor resection.

Symptoms

Complex deformity needing osteotomy planning
Revision arthroplasty with bone loss
Pelvic or sacral tumor requiring en-bloc resection
Severe acetabular fracture or pelvic discontinuity
Pediatric deformity with unique anatomy

Risk Factors

Limited availability or cost barriers
Inaccurate imaging or segmentation errors
Time required for design and printing
Lack of validated registries for outcomes
Need for surgeon training and learning curve

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Complex deformity beyond standard correction
  • Failed prior reconstruction needing revision
  • Tumor resection requiring custom implant
  • Pediatric anatomy unsuitable for standard implants
  • Trauma with severe bone loss

Treatment Methods

01
Acquire high-resolution CT/MRI for segmentation
02
Collaborate with biomedical engineers in CAD planning
03
Print PSI and trial reconstructions
04
Sterilize and validate guides per regulatory standards
05
Verify intraoperative fit and adapt as needed
06
Track outcomes via registries and imaging follow-up
