What is Ocular Trauma Emergency?

Eye trauma includes blunt (ball strike, punch), penetrating (sharp-piercing object), chemical (acid/alkali), and thermal injuries. In chemical injuries, alkali contact causes more serious and deeper damage than acid.

Globe rupture, retinal detachment, hyphema (intraocular bleeding), and optic nerve damage are the main causes of permanent vision loss. Delayed intervention reduces the chance of saving vision.

First aid consists of rapid irrigation with plenty of water (in chemical injury), not pressing on the eye, not trying to remove the foreign body, and transporting to hospital with an eye protector.

Symptoms

Sudden vision loss or blurring
Eye pain and light sensitivity
Bleeding and swelling in the eye
Foreign body sensation
Double vision
Corneal opacity
Eyelid laceration and hematoma

Risk Factors

Not using protective glasses at work
Sports activities (basketball, tennis)
Fights and assaults
Working with chemical substances
Use of firearms and fireworks
Sharp toys in children

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • In chemical exposure, irrigate with water for 15-20 minutes and go to emergency
  • Apply immediately for sudden vision loss, penetrating injury, or severe pain
  • Do not try to remove the foreign body; transport to hospital with sterile protector
  • Ophthalmologic consultation should be obtained as soon as possible

Treatment Methods

02
Not applying pressure to the eye, placing a hard eye shield
03

04
Ophthalmology consultation and high-resolution imaging
