What is Neuromuscular Scoliosis?

Neuromuscular scoliosis is a spinal curvature that develops secondary to muscle or nervous system disease. Cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy and myelomeningocele are the most common causes.

In contrast to idiopathic scoliosis, it usually begins earlier, progresses faster, produces a long C-shaped curve and causes pelvic obliquity. Sitting balance and respiratory function may be impaired.

Treatment considers the degree of curvature, rate of progression, the patient's functional capacity and accompanying medical issues. Bracing may slow progression, but most patients require surgery.

Symptoms

Progressive spinal curvature
Impaired sitting balance
Pelvic obliquity and asymmetry
Reduced respiratory capacity
Pressure ulcers (due to asymmetric sitting surface)

Risk Factors

Cerebral palsy (especially total body involvement)
Muscular dystrophy (Duchenne, Becker)
Spinal muscular atrophy
Myelomeningocele and spina bifida

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When spinal curvature is noticed in a child with neuromuscular disease
  • When sitting balance impairment is observed
  • When respiratory function begins to decline

Treatment Methods

01
Bracing (to slow progression)
02
Seating support systems and adaptive equipment
03
Posterior spinal fusion and instrumentation
04
Growing rods in growing children
05
Perioperative respiratory and nutritional optimization
06
Multidisciplinary follow-up and rehabilitation
