What is Natural Disaster and Triage?

Disaster triage is a classification process aiming to share limited medical personnel and resources for maximum benefit when many casualties exist. The START (Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment) system is widely used.

Casualties are coded as red (immediate), yellow (delayed), green (walking wounded) and black (very low survival chance / deceased). The goal is to save the greatest number of lives.

In Türkiye disaster management is coordinated by AFAD, the Ministry of Health UMKE and 112 teams; basic disaster awareness in every individual strengthens community resilience.

Symptoms

Encountering large numbers of casualties
Rapid assessment of breathing, circulation and consciousness
Measuring capillary refill, pulse and respiratory rate
Gathering walking wounded
Signs of critical injury (bleeding, crush)
Airway obstruction and apnea

Risk Factors

Living in earthquake zones
Areas at risk of floods, landslides and forest fires
Industrial accident and mass casualty potential
Crowded public transport and event venues
Schools and workplaces without disaster plans
Insufficient disaster awareness and first aid training

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • After a disaster, immediate response is essential for shortness of breath, loss of consciousness or uncontrolled bleeding
  • Direct casualties to assembly points coordinated by AFAD and 112
  • Even mildly injured persons should attend for infection and tetanus prophylaxis
  • Casualties at risk of crush syndrome require intensive care monitoring

Treatment Methods

01
Color coding using the START triage method
02
Airway opening and basic hemostasis

Stopping bleeding with tourniquets and pressure
04
