What is Müllerian Anomalies?

Müllerian anomalies arise from fusion or resorption defects of the Müllerian ducts during the embryonic period. They are classified I-VII according to the ASRM classification. Septate uterus is the most common, followed by bicornuate uterus.

Clinical signs vary by anomaly: some remain asymptomatic, while others present with dysmenorrhea, infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss. Co-occurrence with urological anomalies such as renal agenesis is common.

3D ultrasound, hysterosalpingography and MRI are used in diagnosis. The indication for treatment is determined by the anomaly; hysteroscopic resection is the most commonly performed intervention in septate uterus.
