What is Minimally Invasive Bunionectomy?

Minimally invasive bunionectomy is a percutaneous foot surgery that corrects hallux valgus by performing osteotomies of the first metatarsal and proximal phalanx through small skin incisions, using specialized burrs and fluoroscopic guidance.

Compared with traditional open techniques, it can offer reduced soft tissue dissection, less postoperative pain, smaller scars and earlier weight bearing in selected patients.

It requires careful patient selection based on deformity severity, joint congruity and bone quality, and is commonly fixed with percutaneous screws.

Symptoms

Painful bony prominence at the base of the great toe
Visible deformity with great toe deviating laterally
Pain in shoes
Swelling and redness over the bunion
Difficulty finding comfortable footwear
Pain on push off during walking
Lesser toe deformities such as hammer toes

Risk Factors

Family history of hallux valgus
Pes planus and excessive pronation
Hypermobility syndromes
Inflammatory arthritis
Long use of narrow high-heeled shoes
Female sex
Generalized ligamentous laxity

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Pain that limits walking or daily activity
  • Failure of conservative measures
  • Progressive deformity
  • Lesser toe overlap or hammer toe
  • Skin breakdown over the bunion
  • Severe pain in athletic activity
  • Recurrence after previous surgery

Treatment Methods

01
Standardized weight-bearing radiographs and clinical evaluation
02
Conservative trial with wide toe-box footwear, orthotics and analgesics
03
Minimally invasive metatarsal osteotomy with percutaneous burrs
04
Percutaneous screw fixation of the osteotomy
05
Adjunctive Akin osteotomy of the proximal phalanx if indicated
06
Early protected weight bearing in postoperative shoe
07
Structured rehabilitation and follow-up imaging
